How to prepare your life and home for a new addition
A parent who has a disability may face unique challenges in conception, pregnancy, birth, and child care. Do not let these challenges get in your way of experiencing the joy of parenting. Taking the necessary measures to prepare will set you up on the right path.
Preparing for conception
While many people with disabilities can conceive naturally, certain types of medication used for treating and managing disabilities might cause infertility. However, all hope of having a child is not lost. There are options available for parents-to-be who want to have biological children, such as in vitro fertilization.
Once you are ready to conceive, schedule an appointment with an obstetrician and your disability specialist. Although your disability specialist may not know a lot about conception, he/she is well-versed with your condition and its limitations. The specialist will be able to offer great advice on managing your disability while pregnant.
Your obstetrician will walk with you through conception, pregnancy and childbirth. Also, you may want to see a genetics specialist to determine whether there is a probability of your condition being passed down to your child.
Pregnancy and childbirth
Pregnancy comes with discomforts such as nausea, fatigue and back pain, among others. Depending on your disability, these symptoms may be heightened. You will require regular medical attention to monitor progress and mitigate any difficulties early on. Go to a hospital with specialized facilities and personnel to cater to people with disabilities.
Although most deliveries among disabled women are through C-section, some women have successful vaginal births. There have been a few cases of home deliveries too. Talk to your obstetrician to determine your most suitable delivery method.
Plan your finances
Since fertility treatment is usually expensive, and many insurance plans do not cover it for people with a disability, it is important you start saving for it early. Look for financial support in clinics and charitable organizations that help people with disabilities. Negotiate with your insurer to see whether they can cover some costs. Some people have raised money for their fertility treatment through a GoFundMe or Kickstarter campaign.
Furthermore, pregnancy, birth and childcare will come with extra costs. Create a budget for your anticipated expenditure and start saving up. If you are eligible for Social Security disability benefits, your child will also be entitled to up to half the amount that you are eligible for. Your spouse will also qualify for Social Security benefits if they are caring for your child.
Prepare your home
Make modifications to help you operate more efficiently. If your mobility is limited, consider lowering the kitchen counters, widening doorways, installing handrails and replacing stairs with ramps. Reposition light switches to an easily-accessible location.
Create a safe space for your child. Install padding on sharp furniture corners. Cover electrical sockets. Keep toxic items in top cabinets where your child cannot reach them. Install gates and fences to keep your child out of specific areas in the house.
Invest in adapted child care products. A parent in a wheelchair will find a side-opening baby crib more convenient. A sling harness will keep your baby close to you. Replace your regular bed with an adjustable profiling bed. A wearable babble band is useful to a parent with a hearing disability, as it vibrates or lights up when your child makes noise. Magnification aids and talking clocks come in handy if you have a visual impairment.
Take care of yourself
While you’re caring for your child, don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Self-care activities, like eating a nutritious diet, getting exercise, and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule will not only keep you feeling your best, but will also give you the energy you’ll need to keep up with your little one as he or she grows.
Today, there are numerous resources, support systems and information to help all of us be the best parents we can be. Above all, try not to worry too much, and enjoy your new journey. Many parents with disabilities have come before you and done an excellent job. You will be a great parent.

Doulas are medically trained to offer support during and after pregnancy, and can offer the comfort and guidance that you need. Together, you will develop a birth plan and you will prepare physically and mentally for the delivery of your new baby.
Doula Care during Birth
Having a Doula by your side during the birth experience is a great way to get the assistance that you need, and your Doula can be an advocate to ensure that your birth plan is followed. Doulas are very supportive of the decisions that are made by your family, and will help by easing the tension and fear that women often feel about labor and delivery.
Your Doula will offer assistance while you are in labor, helping with relaxation exercises and labor positions. The extra support will allow your partner to be mentally and emotionally present during the birth. When the baby is born, your Doula will immediately assist with breastfeeding and the other post-birth bonding activities that you should enjoy with your child.
Doula Care after Birth
After the baby has arrived, you will need the extra support to learn how to care for your new bundle of joy. A Doula can assist with the transition from the hospital to your home, and will offer the caring support that you need.
Many mothers choose to hire a Night Owl Nanny to help with nighttime feedings and newborn care. It is a relief to have an extra set of hands around the house, so that you can recover and rest after a long pregnancy.

What is a Sleep Fairy?
A Sleep Fairy comes to your home and helps your toddler(s) or infant(s) sleep through the night. She educates the family on the sleep training process. Your sleep fairy will guide your tiny ones through the night and set them up for sleep success for life. If you have sleep regression, (which you will until kiddos are 4) you will have access to your sleep fairy for life via text, email or phone calls.
How does it work?
Your Sleep Fairy has an initial evening visit to assess the nursery, bed time routine and daytime/nap routine. She will meet the toddler and make sure they are all set for sleep success in their room. Infants get to know their sleep trainer a bit in this visit, this will prevent “stranger danger”. She will then arrive between 6pm-11pm (8 hour minimum) to start the magic. She will ease and guide your infant or toddler through the night and teach your babies how to self soothe. This process tends to be 3-14 nights. Depending on the family and situation, it may take longer.
Why are mornings so exciting for toddlers?
Toddlers are great at negotiating. Always needing one more hug, or a drink before they can sleep. How do we keep toddlers enticed to stay in bed? We bribe them. Whether its a balloon or two pieces of bacon in the morning, they will be very excited to see what The Sleep Fairy has left for them. The small prizes are only to get them started and excited about sleeping in their own bed all night.
How did the name ‘Sleep Fairy’ start?
Miss Cecile the Sleep Fairy helped a family get their toddler to sleep in his own room and stop coming into mommy and daddys room. This process was a quick 3 days. Miss Cecile The Sleep Fairy called and checked in with the toddler and the parents a few times within the next couple of weeks. If the parents had sleep regression they would “threaten” to call Miss Cecile. Miss Cecile was very much liked by the toddler and he did not want to “upset” her because he knew she meant business.
Do you need help with your infant or toddler? Call, email or text to chat with a sleep specialist today or tonight. We have helped hundreds of families. You will be pleasantly surprised on how quickly you can see results.
Not in the state of Colorado? Not a problem. We have guided sessions via FaceTime or Skype.
Give your family, and yourself the gift of sleep!
Travel Nannies Help with many things
Caring for the children
Your traveling nanny will care for your children day and night. Late dinners with friends or clients, your nanny will be with your child until you have released them to do otherwise. Whether its a vacation or you are traveling for work, your nanny will keep your child happy, engaged in learning and fun, fed, and making sure naps and bedtime are on a schedule.
Household duties of a Traveling Nanny
Your nanny will do anything child related. Child’s laundry, dishes, clean up the play area, washing sheets, sterilizing bottles, and taking diaper pale out to trash. Most nannies are more than willing to do other light household chores. Discuss with your nanny ahead of time to have a clear understanding of what is expected from your nanny.
You are either busy playing, or working on your traveling adventure. No need to worry. Your nanny will keep track when diapers are running low or milk needs to be picked up. Your nanny will do light grocery shopping and help keep everything stocked for your child to thrive and stay healthy. Most parents provide a credit card or cash for the nanny to spend on play dates, milk, or other miscellaneous items the home or child may need. Please keep in mind you will have to pay for the transportation for your nanny and the children to take a cab, bus or subway to activities or store.
Paying your Nanny while traveling
Every nanny will be different but majority of traveling nannies have a similar request as follows:
Paying for the travel of the nanny (plane ticket, baggage fees, cabs, etc.)
Hotel room. Discuss with your nanny before you travel what the room situation will be. Nannies will request to have their own room. If you are in a house or a hotel, keep your nannies privacy a priority. Traveling many days with a family can be draining and they need down time as well.
If you are leaving your child with the nanny for the night your nanny will request half the pay while sleeping. For example: If you pay your nanny $18 hourly, $9 hourly is expected while she is watching over them while sleeping. If your baby wakes in the middle of the night, it will either be the full $18 or may be more for newborn or sleep training infants.
You will be expected to pay for the hours of travel. If its a 3 hour flight expect to pay for the hourly rate of 3 hours and give or take an hour at the airport. If she is helping get you on the plane, and playing with kiddos, she is working.
Things to keep in mind
Traveling is tiring in itself, add kiddos and unpacking, activities, etc. It adds up. Some parents and kids get cranky when traveling. Your nanny is trying their best to keep everyone happy. Please make sure your nanny does get a couple hours to themselves to sightsee or relax as well.
Nannies become family in most cases. If the family is going out to dinner and you want the nanny to join, invite them out. They may love to be included or maybe they want to relax. If its a non work outing, don’t expect to pay, but make sure you and the nanny are on the same page.
Expect to pay for your nannies food, unless otherwise discussed. If your nanny has a special diet they entertain, most nannies would be happy to shop for themselves if they can get their hands on food they enjoy. Eating out with the kids, dinners with the family (while working), groceries should all be paid for by the parents. If you want to give a $20 allowance for food, discuss with your nanny.
Did we forget something? Add your thoughts below.
A baby nurse is not an actual nurse or woman with a medical degree. Baby nurse, night nurse, Newborn Care Specialist and night nanny are all pretty much the same thing. A baby nurse provides overnight care for your newborn(s). They will come to your home between 7pm-11pm and stay anywhere from 6 am- 9:30 am depending on your families needs.
While you sleep your baby nurse will feed, burp, and settle your newborn back down to sleep. Specialized in newborns they make sure your infant(s) tummy is settled and ready to be laid back down flat on their back. Experienced in reflux, oxygen, multiples, gas, constipation, breastfeeding, setting your newborn up for sleep success and sleep training. Your baby nurse will keep a log of how the night went. Logging sleep schedule, diaper changes and feedings. Your baby nurse will keep the nursery tidy. Doing any baby related chores, including baby laundry, sterilizing bottles/breast pump equipment, and taking out diaper pail.
Baby nurses will work around your families needs. Helping anywhere from 1-7 nights a week. You will grow to love and trust your nanny very quickly. Whether this is your first or your third child, this service comes in very handy. Let a caring professional and experienced baby nurse care for your baby so you can sleep.

We are a generation coming up with ways to help the busy parent, lets embrace that and accept help. Its ok to want to sleep. You spent 9 months creating a little human being. Your body is tired. Rest up Mommas, we have you covered.
Night Owl Nanny Care
Our sleep training program is in depth, educational and guided. We know tired moms and dads don’t always have time or the energy to stick with a 3 night process of being firm. We welcome helpful tools, tricks and products to aid in making sleep transitions as smooth as possible. The winning combination of our Sleep Program and Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit, a patented swaddle transition product, is giving thousands of parents sleeping success.
The Magic Sleepsuit® is an innovative swaddle transition product that provides babies with a cozy, calming, and safe sleep environment. The patented Magic Sleepsuit is designed for babies who are ready to transition from the swaddle, yet still need that cozy and contained feeling to aid in their sleep. The Magic Sleepsuit is designed with the ABC’s of sleep in mind, Alone, Back sleeping in the Crib. It is to be used for back sleeping only in the crib, not in a Rock N Play, Dock A Tot or co sleeping environment.
The Magic Sleepsuit is the perfect transition product for parents who need a little extra help getting their infant to transition comfortably from swaddling around the three month mark. The inner layer of the Magic Sleepsuit is a breathable, soft jersey cotton, followed by a layer of polyfil, and an outer layer or either Microfleece or Cotton. It is designed with open hands and feet that allows a baby’s heat to dissipate as they sleep and a scooped neck that keeps the fabric away from the baby’s face. Either version can be used during any time of year as long as the baby’s room is kept on the cooler side as recommended by the AAP and only one layer is worn underneath.
The Magic Sleepsuit was designed by a mom going through probably a lot of the same sleep struggles that you are currently going through. Her young son wouldn’t sleep anywhere but the stroller. Being a Pediatric Physical Therapist and having a child not sleeping was making her desperate since she knew how important sleep is for proper development and for a happy baby. She used her background and small sewing skills to create sleep aid that gave him the “womb” like feel. To her surprise, it worked really well. When her daughter was born, she pulled her creation back out and used it once again with success. By the time her third child came, she shared her creation with her mommy group. Realizing the success that they all had, she and her husband decided her invention was indeed magic and the Magic Sleepsuit was born. Never did she imagine the success and help that her product would provide to so many sleep deprived parents!
Get our guided, individualized to your family’s needs, 30 day unlimited Sleep Training help and a Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit on our site today. You are not yourself when you are sleep deprived, let us help!
