When to start Sleep Training an Infant

Age

Infant Sleep Training can start as early as 3 months. Twins and Preemies will usually need to wait a couple weeks or months after 3 month marker. Your Sleep Trainer can give you a better idea once they go over gestational age.

Weight

Babies weight needs to be 10-12 pounds, at least. Some babies reach this weight quickly and easily, while other infants are little guys. All very common and nothing to stress about. Your baby will gain weight in time, no rush.  Formula can be more filling and help pack on those extra pounds. No pressure to start using formula, just an option for parents if they are trying to get longer stretches and pack on a few extra pounds. If you’re worried about your babies weight, please chat with your physician.

Ounces per day

24-32 ounces per day is mandatory to start training. If they are not up to 24 ounces (including a dreamfeed) a day, they still need to be fed at night.

Patience is a key component when it comes to Sleep Training requirements. All babies grow and develop at different rates. Its very common for a 3 month old to not weigh or eat the required amount, to start sleep training. Be patient with your baby as they develop into the next milestone.

Breastfeeding Struggles and Solutions

The first 3 days of breastfeeding

skin to skin

Breastfeeding struggles include: latch, milk supply, bonding, improper position and sore nipples.  92 percent of new mothers said they had troubles breastfeeding. You are not alone. You should have an endless amount of resources around you after baby is born. Welcome these suggestions. As the days move on you will find your support team may have gone back to work and or think you’ve got it.

Who has the knowledge

postpartum doula Denver

The nurses at the hospital should have lots of knowledge to help with latching and milk supply. If your problems arise after you are home, your night nurse and or doula should have plenty of tips to guide you to success. Still having difficulties? Reach out to your local lactation source. They can be found at hospitals and community events for moms. Most insurance should cover your lactation consult. Check with your insurance to see who is in your network.

Breastfeeding Help

Relax! Babies can feed off your stress and in return makes them stressed. 30 years ago docs had moms drink a beer to relax them and have the milk supply arrive. This trick is still used today. Obviously, pump and dump that first supply after beer.

Lay on your back while breastfeeding. Baby led breastfeeding.

Sometimes baby isn’t hungry. Offer breast when you and baby are calm. A lot of the times baby gets frustrated when mom is forcing a feeding and baby actually is just tired. Relax, enjoy, and read your babies cues.

Find a night nurse with breastfeeding experience to help you at night.

Night Nanny for Twins

My Motherly Duties

Postpartum Doula and Night Nanny for my twins? Like all mothers we want to be the strong mom that did it herself. I was on maternity leave, why wouldn’t I wake with my twins and breastfeed? Its my motherly duty and job, my time to bond, right? The first night home with my babies went smoothly. “Ive got this” as I patted myself on the back. The next day I had energy.

3 nights later I was shocked at how tired I was. Hating my husband for sleeping through the chaos, and leaving me the next day for work. I couldn’t wait to go to sleep day or night. Being cranky, and thinking motherhood wasn’t for me.

My husband realized the exhaustion and moodiness. His friend had a baby a few months ago and he’s never heard him complain about sleepless nights. He began to inquire with his buddy/co worker how he helped his wife and baby through this new sleepless life. He said “two words my friend, Night Nanny”.

How Night Owl Nanny Care saved my sanity

It took some convincing, but I agreed to meet with Night Owl to see how they could help us.

Emily at Night Owl Nanny Care walked me through all the things a Postpartum Doula and Night Nanny can do for me. Breastfeeding assistance, bonding, swaddle assistance, helping babies sleep better, cleaning and mom/baby support. It was exactly what I needed. We met with 2 Postpartum Doulas/Night Nannies. Both Doulas were great. Lilly’s schedule fit ours best.

Postpartum Doula and Night Nanny for Twins

The Doula came to our home the next day. She helped me with breastfeeding, did my dishes, let me shower and take a nap. She came to doctor appointments and helped me see all options. I was very comfortable with her in our home and caring for my little guys.

That night she came back. She gave me a monitor to check on her or babies if I felt I needed to. Watching the monitor through out the night,  I thought “this is silly”. We turned off the monitor and slept, not like a baby, because they don’t sleep. We slept like a bears in hibernation. My husband and I woke up refreshed to our boys still sleeping. She taught us some sleep tricks and walked me through their night.

Sleep Training, date nights and Vacation

Lilly Sleep Trained the boys at 4 months. Education on sleep training was provided. Our Sleep Specialist helped transition our boys into sleep lovers. She was sweet, helpful, and caring.

Night Owl Nanny Care continues to offer their services. Our night nanny, and a few others have helped with date nights and we even got a parents getaway. We fully trust they provide excellent, screened nannies and doulas. We are pleased with the support they provided to our family.

postpartum depression

4 Things Parents Don’t Discuss Openly

Not bonding with baby

skin to skin

skin to skin

Its common to not bond with your baby right away. It happens quite often. So why is know one talking about it? Women fear they will be judged or something is wrong with them. The best way to bond with your baby, is skin to skin contact, staring into babies eyes and having baby mock your facial expressions. This can be helpful for mom, dad, and siblings. Moms, you will eventually bond with your baby. Give it time. Everything will be ok.

Breastfeeding is hard

breastfeeding

We are all told breastfeeding is the most natural thing in motherhood. Thats not the case for many. Latch and position are important. Most moms can’t throw their baby on a breast and expect perfect feedings. If you are having troubles breastfeeding, no worries, plenty of expertise around to help. The most helpful tip we can offer is lie down on back and have baby find your nipple. They can smell that delicious milk and become very determined. If breastfeeding is painful, unlatch and try again. You want babies mouth wide and around most of the nipple. Its a common struggle, you are not alone. It will get better.

Postpartum Depression

postpartum depression

Postpartum depression affects 1 in 7 women. Thats a huge amount of women struggling and being hush hush about it. It’s ok to be depressed after your baby arrives. Its common. Solution seeking should be your first priority. Talking to your doctor and family about your depression will open up some helpful solutions. You will get past your depression, and love your baby. This feeling is not permanent. Sleep is a huge impact on depression. Make sure you are taking care of yourself as well. If you have feelings of hurting yourself or your baby you should call 911 and or your doctor immediately.

Everybody has a “right” opinion

swaddled baby

Everybody has an opinion or experience they want to share with you. How to swaddle or not to swaddle, bathe, give a binky, don’t give a binky. You will always be told what you are doing wrong and rarely what you are doing right. Most people are genuinely trying to be helpful. Do your own research, take into consideration of what others suggest and decide as a family whats best for you and your family. Parenting is hard at all stages. You’re doing a great job!

If you need assistance day or night, please reach out to us. We offer Postpartum Doula’s, Night Nannies and Sleep Training Specialist.

Postpartum Doula Denver

What does a Postpartum Doula do?

Postpartum Doula

Postpartum Doula Denver

A postpartum doula is a trained professional, that supports mom and baby after delivery. This can be very helpful for the new mom as well as the experienced mom. After birth your’e exhausted, emotions are high, and lots of decisions need to be made. A postpartum doula provides you with options and clarity.

You may need your doula in the hospital, at home, doctors appointments, or at night. Your doula and you will make a schedule to assist you when its most beneficial to your families needs. Postpartum Doulas can assist when you aren’t bonding right away, having mood disorders, or even feeling overwhelmed.

Doulas assist with breastfeeding (singles and multiples), bonding with the baby, bathing, errands, and small chores. They can assist with sibling and dad bonding with baby, multiple births, postpartum depression, overall support and encouragement.

A mom recently told me “All moms are scared. Scared during pregnancy, scared during birth, and scared after birth”. The whole process is scary. Yes, very rewarding, but the fear of making the right decisions is always lurking. Your Doula will help you navigate all options and help your family make the best choice for your baby and family.

All doulas offer their own expertise. It can be sleep training, essential oils, placenta capsulation, so make sure to pick the Doula that fits your family needs. A lot of the times its an outside pair of eyes that sees what a mom, parent or baby needs to make this new life change easy and rewarding.

The Sleep Fairy

What is a Sleep Fairy?

A Sleep Fairy comes to your home and helps your toddler(s) or infant(s) sleep through the night. She educates the family on the sleep training process. Your sleep fairy will guide your tiny ones through the night and set them up for sleep success for life. If you have sleep regression, (which you will until kiddos are 4) you will have access to your sleep fairy for life via text, email or phone calls.

How does it work?

Your Sleep Fairy has an initial evening visit to assess the nursery, bed time routine and daytime/nap routine. She will meet the toddler and make sure they are all set for sleep success in their room. Infants get to know their sleep trainer a bit in this visit, this will prevent “stranger danger”. She will then arrive between 6pm-11pm (8 hour minimum) to start the magic. She will ease and guide your infant or toddler through the night and teach your babies how to self soothe. This process tends to be 3-14 nights. Depending on the family and situation, it may take longer.

Why are mornings so exciting for toddlers?

Toddlers are great at negotiating. Always needing one more hug, or a drink before they can sleep. How do we keep toddlers enticed to stay in bed? We bribe them. Whether its a balloon or two pieces of bacon in the morning, they will be very excited to see what The Sleep Fairy has left for them. The small prizes are only to get them started and excited about sleeping in their own bed all night.

How did the name ‘Sleep Fairy’ start?

Miss Cecile the Sleep Fairy helped a family get their toddler to sleep in his own room and stop coming into mommy and daddys room. This process was a quick 3 days. Miss Cecile The Sleep Fairy called and checked in with the toddler and the parents a few times within the next couple of weeks. If the parents had sleep regression they would “threaten” to call Miss Cecile. Miss Cecile was very much liked by the toddler and he did not want to “upset” her because he knew she meant business.

Do you need help with your infant or toddler? Call, email or text to chat with a sleep specialist today or tonight. We have helped hundreds of families. You will be pleasantly surprised on how quickly you can see results.

What does a new parent need? Sleep, Night Nanny, and more sleep

Sleep.

The average parent(s) work 40-50 hours a week. Leaving a few hours at home with their new baby. After a long day at work and traffic most parents just want to spend time with their kids before bedtime. We all hope that our babies are sleeping through the night by the time we return to work. Depending on weight and babies age that is always pending.

How does a working parent handle staying up all night with the baby and work? You don’t. You sleep. You hire a Newborn Care Specialist or Doula, also known as a night nanny, night nurse, or baby nurse. Its exhausting working on a lack of sleep, and then coming home to house duties and your family’s needs. Its only a matter of time before you get burnt out. Lets face it, we all fizzle at some point. You’re not alone!

This service is for the new parents but also the already thriving parent. Your second kid you’re more willing to ask for help. Working, getting a toddler and your newborn dressed in morning and then heading out for the day is hard. Thousands of moms are asking for the help, don’t feel like you’re the only one wanting some extra hands and sleep.

Our night nannies care for your newborn through out the night. Feedings, diaper changes, baby laundry, tidy nursery, and setting up for sleep success (sleep training included). Your night nanny can have the baby ready and dressed for you to get out the door in the morning. The number one cause of postpartum depression is a lack of sleep. Don’t let your family and yourself go through the pain. We have nannies to help and you WILL ENJOY those nights of sleep.

How to prepare for a Baby

What needs to be done before the baby arrives?

baby67

You never know when that baby will arrive. Start early, around 32 weeks. When you get your energy back. You don’t want to wait too long, not only will you be big, and tired, but your baby may arrive early.  Don’t stress yourself out. Ask for help.

We will make this sweet and to the point.

Clothes

Wash and put all clothes away.

Daily Baby Stuff

baby37

Make sure crib, diaper changing table and swing are put together. Diapers, swaddles, lotion, put in its place. Once baby arrives home, you will be too tired to do chores.

Pack Hospital Bag

baby33

Extra clothes, slippers, diaper wipes, blankets, breast pads, snacks, etc. All in arms reach after baby arrives. Keep it in your car, starting early on. Plan on breastfeeding? It doesn’t always go as planned. Have formula and bottles on hand just in case. You will want to do your research on formula and make sure you have the right fit for your family.

Freeze Healthy Meals

Have healthy meals prepped in your freezer for your family to heat up quickly. You may get lots of food from guests. Remember people don’t know your eating preferences as well as you do. Last thing you want to do, is stomach something you dislike.

How to get your Toddler Excited about a New sibling

New baby on the way

Its very exciting news to have a brother or sister on the way. Most kids are very excited at first. Once they realize all that undivided attention that was once on them, is now on their sibling, perspectives change a bit. I asked my parents when my sister was going back to the hospital. Its very common. How do we get them excited? We bribe them with gifts, like usual.

Get your toddler excited

Tell them all the things they can do with their new sibling. They will have somebody to play with at all times. A forever friend. Excite them about how fun it will be. The important role a big sibling has. What they can do to help Mommy and Daddy when their sibling arrives. Show them the ultrasounds, feel when baby is kicking and let them help you decorate the nursery.

Gifts

Families have started this new trend of “the baby” giving their older sibling a “hello” gift. In return you have your toddler pick out a “welcome” gift for their new baby sibling. What toddler doesn’t love gifts? Its a fast way to a toddlers heart. It doesn’t have to be extravagant but get her excited about a gift and keep telling her, “maybe the Baby will get that for you”.

Attention

Make sure your toddler is still getting lots of attention. Kisses and hugs from mom, dad, grandpa, the whole family. Take her and the new baby on “Sister dates” “Sibling fun”. Just so she knows she can have fun with her non mobile friend. She will want to show her baby sibling all the fun exciting things she sees. Some toddlers take a few to warm up to their new friend. Be patient, and encourage them to be happy and excited about their new friend.

Did we forget something important? Just add it in comments below.

5 things new Daddies need to know

New Dad

Being a new Dad can be scary, but the most rewarding feeling. There will be lots of things you didn’t know. You may feel unready or like this Dad thing wasn’t made for you. Good news is, all first time Dads are scared. Its very overwhelming at first. You will have many questions, don’t be afraid to ask. The hospital is a great learning time. Ask, ask, and then ask some more. Hospital staff has heard every question you could imagine.

Giving Birth

We’ve heard it is the most beautiful thing to watch. It is, but be prepared to see the not so beautiful part about it too. Your love may pee or poo, there will be blood and stuff you didn’t know existed. Be understanding and helpful during this time. That beautiful woman of yours has a lot to worry about while birthing. Being embarrassed about normal bodily, birthing functions should not have to be one of them. Don’t bring up how gross, or light headed you were because she was going through something 100 times harder. Give her love and support. Tell her how beautiful and brave she is. Thank her for bringing your child into the world. Some significant others give a “Birthing Gift”. Just a heads up, you may cry like a little baby. It will give you tears of joy you didn’t see coming.

Baby’s need to burp after every feeding

Their wobbly heads make it hard to burp at first. Burping comes in many different positions. See which one works best for you. Have someone show you each way to burp and use the most comfortable to you. Spit up is very normal. Sometimes its seems like they spit up their whole feeding. It usually looks like more than what it is. If you feel they spit up excessively, talk to your doctor about GERD. Keep burp cloths handy. Keep baby upright 10-15 minutes after feeding. Keeping upright helps settle their tummy and should help with excessive spit ups.

Diapers

Grab both ankles with one hand and clean bottoms and genitals with the opposite hand. Diapers can leak. Make sure you keep diapers snug to bodies to prevent leaking. Babies poo will be a dark black color, and tarry-looking for first few days. It will turn green and yellow earth tones when the meconium (sterile poo) has expelled itself from the intestines. Babies can poo several times a day. Its usually very evident when they need a diaper change. Faces and loud noises from that tiny body will surprise you.

Pacifier

Discuss with your wife if you will be using pacifiers or not. Some dads give pacifiers when left alone with the baby. Its a quick solution to crying in most cases. Sometimes pacifiers can cause nipple confusion. If your wife is planning on breastfeeding, make sure you and her discuss pacifier plan.

Mistakes

We all make mistakes when parenting. It happens, don’t be too hard on one another. First time parents should share things they learn, so they are on the same page. For example: My husband didn’t know babies shouldn’t have peanut butter before the age of one. We were scared and I was upset at first. Our baby is fine, no harm done (don’t try at home). We learned from it and tried to educate each other on bits we learned. Studies have varied since then so do your research. Help each other out and try to learn as much as possible in each month of your child’s development.

Have questions? Just ask. We have a community of parents asking the same thing.

Let us know what we left out and what helped you as a new dad.

We are here to help!

Night Owl Nanny Care

What is a Baby Nurse?

Baby Nurse

IMG_0467

A baby nurse is not an actual nurse or woman with a medical degree. Baby nurse, night nurse, Newborn Care Specialist and night nanny are all pretty much the same thing. A baby nurse provides overnight care for your newborn(s). They will come to your home between 7pm-11pm and stay anywhere from 6 am- 9:30 am depending on your families needs.

While you sleep your baby nurse will feed, burp, and settle your newborn back down to sleep. Specialized in newborns they make sure your infant(s) tummy is settled and ready to be laid back down flat on their back. Experienced in reflux, oxygen, multiples, gas, constipation, breastfeeding, setting your newborn up for sleep success and sleep training. Your baby nurse will keep a log of how the night went. Logging sleep schedule, diaper changes and feedings. Your baby nurse will keep the nursery tidy. Doing any baby related chores, including baby laundry, sterilizing bottles/breast pump equipment, and taking out diaper pail.

Baby nurses will work around your families needs. Helping anywhere from 1-7 nights a week. You will grow to love and trust your nanny very quickly. Whether this is your first or your third child, this service comes in very handy. Let a caring professional and experienced baby nurse care for your baby so you can sleep.

We are a generation coming up with ways to help the busy parent, lets embrace that and accept help. Its  ok to want to sleep. You spent 9 months creating a little human being. Your body is tired. Rest up Mommas, we have you covered.

Founder

Cecile

The owner Cecile Bergren is very hands on with the company and families. She surprisingly enough started when she was just 11 years old, caring for her newborn cousin. It seems crazy to her now, but she had a passion for infants at a very young age, and her family saw it and trusted her with that gift. Calling her the ‘Baby whisperer’ at such a young age has given her 20 years of rewarding experience. Her passion is helping families sleep so they can enjoy their time together even more. She loves to hear of the success stories and how things have improved inside a home when everyone is sleeping. She laughs “While the Snickers commercials are about not being yourself while you’re hungry, they are almost an exact duplicate of parents trying to make it through the day on no sleep.” Night Owl Nanny Care wants to help.
