Postpartum Doula Denver

What does a Postpartum Doula do?

Postpartum Doula

Postpartum Doula Denver

A postpartum doula is a trained professional, that supports mom and baby after delivery. This can be very helpful for the new mom as well as the experienced mom. After birth your’e exhausted, emotions are high, and lots of decisions need to be made. A postpartum doula provides you with options and clarity.

You may need your doula in the hospital, at home, doctors appointments, or at night. Your doula and you will make a schedule to assist you when its most beneficial to your families needs. Postpartum Doulas can assist when you aren’t bonding right away, having mood disorders, or even feeling overwhelmed.

Doulas assist with breastfeeding (singles and multiples), bonding with the baby, bathing, errands, and small chores. They can assist with sibling and dad bonding with baby, multiple births, postpartum depression, overall support and encouragement.

A mom recently told me “All moms are scared. Scared during pregnancy, scared during birth, and scared after birth”. The whole process is scary. Yes, very rewarding, but the fear of making the right decisions is always lurking. Your Doula will help you navigate all options and help your family make the best choice for your baby and family.

All doulas offer their own expertise. It can be sleep training, essential oils, placenta capsulation, so make sure to pick the Doula that fits your family needs. A lot of the times its an outside pair of eyes that sees what a mom, parent or baby needs to make this new life change easy and rewarding.

How to prepare for a Baby

What needs to be done before the baby arrives?

baby67

You never know when that baby will arrive. Start early, around 32 weeks. When you get your energy back. You don’t want to wait too long, not only will you be big, and tired, but your baby may arrive early.  Don’t stress yourself out. Ask for help.

We will make this sweet and to the point.

Clothes

Wash and put all clothes away.

Daily Baby Stuff

baby37

Make sure crib, diaper changing table and swing are put together. Diapers, swaddles, lotion, put in its place. Once baby arrives home, you will be too tired to do chores.

Pack Hospital Bag

baby33

Extra clothes, slippers, diaper wipes, blankets, breast pads, snacks, etc. All in arms reach after baby arrives. Keep it in your car, starting early on. Plan on breastfeeding? It doesn’t always go as planned. Have formula and bottles on hand just in case. You will want to do your research on formula and make sure you have the right fit for your family.

Freeze Healthy Meals

Have healthy meals prepped in your freezer for your family to heat up quickly. You may get lots of food from guests. Remember people don’t know your eating preferences as well as you do. Last thing you want to do, is stomach something you dislike.

5 things new Daddies need to know

New Dad

Being a new Dad can be scary, but the most rewarding feeling. There will be lots of things you didn’t know. You may feel unready or like this Dad thing wasn’t made for you. Good news is, all first time Dads are scared. Its very overwhelming at first. You will have many questions, don’t be afraid to ask. The hospital is a great learning time. Ask, ask, and then ask some more. Hospital staff has heard every question you could imagine.

Giving Birth

We’ve heard it is the most beautiful thing to watch. It is, but be prepared to see the not so beautiful part about it too. Your love may pee or poo, there will be blood and stuff you didn’t know existed. Be understanding and helpful during this time. That beautiful woman of yours has a lot to worry about while birthing. Being embarrassed about normal bodily, birthing functions should not have to be one of them. Don’t bring up how gross, or light headed you were because she was going through something 100 times harder. Give her love and support. Tell her how beautiful and brave she is. Thank her for bringing your child into the world. Some significant others give a “Birthing Gift”. Just a heads up, you may cry like a little baby. It will give you tears of joy you didn’t see coming.

Baby’s need to burp after every feeding

Their wobbly heads make it hard to burp at first. Burping comes in many different positions. See which one works best for you. Have someone show you each way to burp and use the most comfortable to you. Spit up is very normal. Sometimes its seems like they spit up their whole feeding. It usually looks like more than what it is. If you feel they spit up excessively, talk to your doctor about GERD. Keep burp cloths handy. Keep baby upright 10-15 minutes after feeding. Keeping upright helps settle their tummy and should help with excessive spit ups.

Diapers

Grab both ankles with one hand and clean bottoms and genitals with the opposite hand. Diapers can leak. Make sure you keep diapers snug to bodies to prevent leaking. Babies poo will be a dark black color, and tarry-looking for first few days. It will turn green and yellow earth tones when the meconium (sterile poo) has expelled itself from the intestines. Babies can poo several times a day. Its usually very evident when they need a diaper change. Faces and loud noises from that tiny body will surprise you.

Pacifier

Discuss with your wife if you will be using pacifiers or not. Some dads give pacifiers when left alone with the baby. Its a quick solution to crying in most cases. Sometimes pacifiers can cause nipple confusion. If your wife is planning on breastfeeding, make sure you and her discuss pacifier plan.

Mistakes

We all make mistakes when parenting. It happens, don’t be too hard on one another. First time parents should share things they learn, so they are on the same page. For example: My husband didn’t know babies shouldn’t have peanut butter before the age of one. We were scared and I was upset at first. Our baby is fine, no harm done (don’t try at home). We learned from it and tried to educate each other on bits we learned. Studies have varied since then so do your research. Help each other out and try to learn as much as possible in each month of your child’s development.

Have questions? Just ask. We have a community of parents asking the same thing.

Let us know what we left out and what helped you as a new dad.

We are here to help!

Founder

Cecile

The owner Cecile Bergren is very hands on with the company and families. She surprisingly enough started when she was just 11 years old, caring for her newborn cousin. It seems crazy to her now, but she had a passion for infants at a very young age, and her family saw it and trusted her with that gift. Calling her the ‘Baby whisperer’ at such a young age has given her 20 years of rewarding experience. Her passion is helping families sleep so they can enjoy their time together even more. She loves to hear of the success stories and how things have improved inside a home when everyone is sleeping. She laughs “While the Snickers commercials are about not being yourself while you’re hungry, they are almost an exact duplicate of parents trying to make it through the day on no sleep.” Night Owl Nanny Care wants to help.
